Liquid fluxes
Which liquid flux should you choose?
Liquid flux is widely used in electronics soldering, PCB maintenance, and precision repair applications. Its main advantages are versatility and ease of use. Liquid soldering flux is supplied in fluid form and can be applied using a brush, fibre-tip applicator, spray system, or directly during the soldering process. This flexibility makes it suitable for both manual work and selected automated processes.
Liquid flux is particularly effective when soldering larger surfaces or components where precise application with a flux pen may be less practical. It is also commonly used for multilayer assemblies, complex PCB structures, and components of varying sizes. In addition to soldering, liquid flux can assist in removing old solder residues and preparing metal surfaces prior to assembly. Selecting the right formulation depends on the specific technical requirements of the application. When choosing liquid flux, consider the following factors:
- Chemical composition: different flux formulations (rosin-based, water-soluble, no-clean) are designed for specific soldering processes and cleaning requirements.
- Activation temperature: the activation range should match the soldering process to ensure proper oxide removal and optimal wetting.
- Electrical properties: low-residue and non-corrosive formulations are preferred for sensitive electronic assemblies.
- Mechanical performance: certain applications require flux that supports durable and reliable solder joints under mechanical stress.
- Cost efficiency: the selected solution should balance performance, compliance, and overall production cost.
