ESD FLOOR TREADS
Which ESD runner should you choose?
ESD runners in our store are available in three variants:
- GRANITO antistatic floor runner (1.9 x 10 m and 1.2 x 10 m)
- Single-layer conductive black runner (0.6 x 10 m, 0.9 x 10 m and 1.2 x 10 m)
- Double-layer conductive black/grey runner (0.6 x 10 m, 0.9 x 10 m and 1.2 x 10 m)
The choice depends primarily on the type of protection required and the size needed for a given workstation.
Why is it worth using ESD floor mats?
An ESD floor mat is primarily used to dissipate and ground electrostatic charges. An antistatic mat may also offer anti-fatigue properties, which improves workplace ergonomics; these specific products are referred to as “ESD anti-fatigue mats”. Is it worth using ESD floor mats? One could just as well ask whether protection against electrostatic discharge is important, given that most discharges are invisible to the naked eye. The answer is definitely yes. In fact, it is highly recommended. Humans are responsible for as much as 70% of the electrostatic charges generated at the workstation, and what about the rest of the equipment? Any friction between two surfaces can generate hazardous charges which, in turn, can damage sensitive components and generate unnecessary costs.
Which antistatic floor mat should you choose?
The choice of an antistatic floor mat depends mainly on personal preferences and the specifics of the workplace. Our store specializes in products designed to protect against electrostatic discharge, which is why you will find a wide range of options here. We recommend reviewing our offer in detail, as only then can the most suitable product be selected for individual needs.
How does an ESD runner work?
All surfaces on which electronic components are placed must be connected to the EPA ground and have a point-to-point resistance between 104 Ω and 1010 Ω, as well as a resistance to ground between 7.5 × 105 Ω and 109 Ω. Also known as antistatic runners, ESD protective mats are an integral part of an ESD workstation, especially in areas where components are assembled manually. Runners are used to protect ESD-sensitive components and assemblies from potential damage caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD). They are designed to dissipate static charges from objects or components placed on the surface, for example on a workbench or floor, and maintain them at the same electrical potential as the mat, thereby reducing the risk of discharge.
There are two types of ESD mats available: ESD workbench mats and ESD floor mats. For example, within an electrostatic protected area (EPA), antistatic mats are often fixed to workbenches or laid on the floor and grounded to earth in order to prevent static discharge. Although antistatic mats are just one of many ESD control products, they are among the most effective ways to prevent items from being exposed to electrostatic charge.
